Michelangelo once said, “A man paints with his brains, not his hands.” Today there is more evidence than ever of a powerful link between arts education and cognitive development. In an environment where budget cuts are forcing school districts across the nation to either scale back or completely eliminate their arts education programs, Denver-based Janus and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival have – for over 10 years – been helping to keep the arts alive in Colorado schools through a unique arts education initiative known as the Janus Student Art Buying Program.
This one-of-a-kind experiential art education program engages students in an in-school exercise to help them explore the many facets of art, and then enables students to apply their knowledge through a hands-on art-buying opportunity at the Festival where they will purchase artwork for permanent installation at the school. Four schools also have the opportunity to purchase art for the Mobile Art Gallery (MAG), a collection of museum-quality art that travels to public schools, libraries and community centers throughout Colorado.
The Program extends its reach beyond schools by inviting the general public to take part in this unique educational experience.
As either a student or a member of the community at large, you can cast your vote for the artist you’d like to see featured in the Mobile Art Gallery every year. Check back next year to view exhibiting artists and their work and vote for the one you feel have the potential to make the most significant educational and artistic impact. Your input will narrow the pool from which Janus Student Art Buying Program student-participants will make their final selections.
You’ll also have the chance to select the Colorado school you’d like to see win a two-week visit from the Mobile Art Gallery. The Program will reward the school with the greatest number of votes! And everyone who votes will be entered into a random drawing for Festival VIP packages, framed art posters, and more!
At a time when funding for school arts programs is severely limited, you can help Janus and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival fill the void by making the Student Art Buying Program and Mobile Art Gallery the best they can be.
